Retreat at  the Gambrel

About Us

A Romantic Getaway in Illinois

.

Built in 2012 beside a private, six‑acre lake, the Retreat at the Gambrel rests amid rolling hills on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest’s Trail of Tears in Jonesboro, Illinois. Family‑owned and operated, the cabin’s very location and name were inspired by my grandfather—fondly called “Doc”—whose love of the outdoors was legendary. He often rocked on his porch swing, pipe in hand, and, while gazing across the water, would remark, “That spot would be perfect for a lil’ cabin.” Today his vision lives on in this tranquil lakeside haven.

As Doc’s eldest grandchild, I—Robert—turned his porch‑swing daydream into reality. Together with our family, I raised a cabin he would be proud of and named it Retreat at the Gambrel in tribute to his vision. We’ve wrapped this tranquil hideaway in the same warmth that filled Doc’s home, so when you arrive, we hope you’ll feel less like a guest and more like part of the family.

Our Story

I am a retired RN, a proud wife, mother of five, grandmother of fifteen, and great-grandmother of six. Creativity has always been a guiding light in my life — from sewing and crafting, to owning a Tea Room, participating in craft shows and ETSY, and even co-owning a lavender farm where I stocked our gift shop with homemade treasures.

My latest and dearest project is Retreat at the Gambrel — a dream born from my passion for preservation, hospitality, and vision. In 2023, I partnered with a longtime friend and talented contractor, Bob, to transform a 100+ year-old barn with a classic gambrel-style roof into a beautiful, modern venue while honoring its rich history. After months of dedication and love, we proudly say, “We have preserved the past so you can enjoy the present.”

I cannot wait to meet you and share this special place, where creativity, history, and heart come together. It is a blessing to continue creating meaningful spaces, and I am grateful every day for the gifts of family, friendship, and faith. God is good!
